World / Reggae

World music is a musical category encompassing many different styles of music from around the world, including traditional music, quasi-traditional music, and music where more than one cultural tradition intermingles. Ultimately it is Non-Western music and often reflects traditional influences.

Reggae is music unique to Jamaica, but it ironically has its roots in New Orleans R&B. It relies on skittering guitar and syncopated rhythms which have been slowed down. Lending itself to a number of interpretations, from melodic rock steady and rock and folk-influenced song writing to the trippy, near-psychedelic soundscapes of dub artists. It has crossed into the mainstream through the bright, bouncy "reggae sunsplash" festivals and pop-oriented bands.

We are looking for:

  1. Strength of composition
  2. Originality
  3. Relevance to category
  4. Delivery of composition

Although recording quality and production values are not governing factors in this category, we expect a reasonable standard. A strong piece will be severely hampered either by poor delivery or recording. The winning piece will be the one which best meets these requirements.

Entries are locked into category whether they are suitable or not. If an entry is incorrectly placed then it will be excluded from the marking process.
