Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted by mouth, as music of the lower classes, and as music with unknown composers. One meaning often given is that of old songs, with no known composers; another is music that has been transmitted and evolved by a process of oral transmission or performed by custom over a long period of time.
It is simple, acoustic-based music that spins everyday events and common people into mythic status. Many traditional folksongs have no known author; they have simply evolved over the years.
Folk (for the purposes of these awards) is a category that reflects a musical style that is clearly derived from folk and can be delivered in any language. It would have to be an original acoustic or semi acoustic piece.
We are looking for:
- Strength of composition
- Relevance to category
- Delivery of composition
Although recording quality and production values are not governing factors in this category, we expect a reasonable standard. A strong piece will be severely hampered either by poor delivery or recording. The winning piece will be the one which best meets these requirements.
If there are not enough entries in a category that you have entered to go ahead you will be contacted and given the choice receive a refund or if we can successfully contact you by the 9th of September 2017 we will offer you the opportunity to enter the same song into a different category that meets the criteria.
