Country music is about tradition, yet its simple form lends itself to endless variations on similar themes. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, fiddles, and harmonicas. Most of its songs are built around three chords and a plain melody but these forms are so basic, they allow for many different styles from the gritty sounds of honky-tonk to the jazzy improvisations of Western Swing.

We are looking for:

  1. Strength of composition
  2. Originality
  3. Relevance to category
  4. Delivery of composition

Although recording quality and production values are not governing factors in this category, we expect a reasonable standard. A strong piece will be severely hampered either by poor delivery or recording. The winning piece will be the one which best meets these requirements.

Entries are locked into category whether they are suitable or not. If an entry is incorrectly placed then it will be excluded from the marking process.
